Jan Waterfield

As a visual artist who revels in life on the Kapiti Coast, I often draw inspiration from Nature and all its wonder.

My major influences have been European travel, and associated art history, and New Zealand native flora and fauna.

Born in the Hutt Valley - at the age of nineteen I escaped all the way to Wellington, where for many years, I revelled in city life and all it had to offer, before settling on the beautiful Kapiti Coast.

As an only child I was much loved and well nurtured, although I think my father would secretly have liked his only offspring to be a boy!  At an early age he introduced me to all manner of wonderful birds, bugs, and butterflies, some which feature regularly in my artwork.

In a sheltered environment, a lot of my childhood playtime was spent alone in an imaginary world. Thus, I resorted to all manner of ‘make believe’ to amuse myself as a child, that is still evident in my work now.

My mother and grandmother were also artistic – musically and in the visual arts. Both women sadly abandoned their artistic talents upon marriage.  My mother’s great uncle was W.G.Baker, who successfully made a living as a late-Victorian NZ landscape painter.

My education was focused on academic achievement, (and ‘getting a good job’) rather than the arts.  However throughout my life I have drawn pictures from my visual memory, and also written amusing tales from the imagination, weaving magic out of seemingly ordinary things.

Often the title of my art-piece offers the viewer a hint of the amusement, from my perspective as the artist.  I endeavour to share with you a different, more light-hearted way of viewing the world!

A background in art and craft spanning more than twenty years was the perfect foundation for the journey into painting. I started to paint after an art/study tour of France and Italy in 2000 that has influenced my work, particularly handmade masks.

Since my first solo exhibition in 2004, I have regularly exhibited in the Wellington region.

Although I work from my own Huia Gallery as a studio artist, in recent times I have been exhibiting in the wider community again – including the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts.

I have successfully participated in ten consecutive Kapiti Arts Trails, as I will be again this year. I have also been part of the Waikanae Waitangi Weekend Studio Arts Trail for the last three years, as well as the annual Labour Weekend Rotary Art Show, the Paekakariki Community Trust Art Show, and the now well established Tutere Gallery at Waikanae Beach.

In summing up - I would just like to say that I paint from the familiar with themes we all know and love.   My work invites you a step further into the realm of fantasy.  I like to create illusions - often brushed with a gentle surrealism. Painting in bright and colourful oils and acrylic, the artwork is designed to bring joy to your heart and at the same time aiming to amuse through the art of visual story-telling!
